Tend is a game for adults in the United States. Your pet grows with your real health: your steps, your workouts, and, if you choose, your weight, your sleep and the food you log. This page says plainly what Tend collects, where it comes from, why, who it goes to, how long we keep it, and what you can do about all of it, wherever in the US you live.
Our Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy covers your health data in particular, as Washington, Nevada, Connecticut and other states require. It's part of this policy.
| What | Where it comes from | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Your account | You, or Sign in with Apple or Google | Your email, your username (public), the name your friends see ("Your name"), and a password, which our sign-in provider keeps scrambled so nobody can read it. If you sign in with Apple or Google, they send us your email and, if you let them, your name, which our sign-in provider stores with your account. |
| Your age | You | The year you were born, to make sure you're 18 or older and to set a fair daily goal. |
| Health and fitness (consumer health data) | Apple Health, your iPhone's motion sensor, your Apple Watch, and what you type | Steps, exercise minutes and workouts; your sleep (time asleep, sleep stages, and when you fell asleep and woke) and your resting heart rate; the sessions you do in Tend (time, distance over time, steps, mile splits and estimated calories; the route of an outdoor session stays on your phone and is never sent to us); weight, height and goal weight if you enter them, and whether you want to lose, keep or gain; the food you log and its calories, your favorite and saved foods; the sets and workouts you log (your strength logs); days you rest or mark yourself sick or hurt. When you open a workout, Tend reads its heart rate, flights climbed and running form on your phone to show that workout. Your heart rate during and after a session is shown to you, not kept. If "Save workouts to Apple Health" is on (it's on unless you turn it off in Settings), the sessions you start on your iPhone are saved to Apple Health as workouts, with their distance and, for outdoor ones, their route. |
| Your game | The app | Your pet, its room and look, treats, the journal and memories, and the pictures in its photo album. Album pictures are made by the game, of your pet in the game, never from your camera roll. |
| Friends and chat | You and your friends | Friends, requests, cheers, nudges, gifts, room visits, shared goals, pairs, chat messages, and any reports or blocks. |
| Location, only if you allow it | Your iPhone | Used on your phone during a session you start (including in the background with your phone in your pocket, while iOS shows its location indicator) so your pet follows your path and the trail's weather matches yours. The route stays on your phone for the workout's map (your last 60 sessions) and is never sent to us; if Save workouts to Apple Health is on, the route is saved to Apple Health with the workout. For weather, a position rounded to about two-thirds of a mile (1 km) goes to Apple Weather (WeatherKit). Tend never sets up geofences around health care locations. |
| Camera, only if you use it | Your iPhone | Only to scan a food barcode. The barcode number goes to Open Food Facts. No picture is kept. |
| Purchases | Apple | Whether you have Tend+ or a cosmetic pack. Apple handles payment; we never see your card. |
| Your Tend+ subscription record | Apple | If you subscribe, Apple tells our server about it: the subscription's ID, which plan, whether it's a test purchase, when the paid period ends, any billing grace period, whether it renews, and whether it was refunded or revoked. We use it only to know whether you have Tend+. We also keep a list of the notices Apple sent us (their ID, kind and when they came), with nothing about who they were for, so none is handled twice. |
| Your Sign in with Apple token, if you use it | Apple | When you sign in with Apple, Apple gives our server a token for your account. We keep it only to revoke it, so that deleting your Tend account also ends Tend's link to your Apple ID, as Apple asks. We never use it for anything else. |
| Notifications | Your iPhone | If you allow them, your phone's notification token and the notification switches you set. Also your time zone's offset from UTC and the hour your morning starts, so friends' notifications stay quiet at night. |
| Usage and crashes, only if you choose Help improve Tend | The app | Only with your OK to help improve Tend, which is off unless you turn it on. Without it, nothing is counted, queued or sent, and a crash log stays on your phone. With it: a random account ID; simple events like "opened the app" or "finished a session" with small labels (the day number, which screen, which kind of session); and crash reports (the kind of error, its first line with numbers hidden, and where in the code it happened). Some of those events are about your activity: that you met your goal for the day, finished a workout and which kind, logged a weigh-in or a meal, or booked a rest day. They say that it happened, never the numbers. Events and crash reports never hold your steps, minutes, weight, food, sleep, heart rate, streak or weight goal. Anything an older version of Tend queued before this choice existed is deleted, never sent. |
| Network information | Your connection | Like every app and website, the services Tend talks to (our server, Open Food Facts, Apple, Google) see your IP address when your phone connects, and keep it in short-lived logs. |
What we don't collect: biometrics (fingerprints, face data, voiceprints), your contacts, your camera roll, your microphone, your precise location history (your routes stay on your phone), or anything from other apps beyond what you let Apple Health share.
We collect only what these need, and we use your health data only for them. We never use it for advertising, never sell it, and never use it to make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects (like credit, insurance, housing or jobs).
You can also turn off Health, motion, location, camera or notification access anytime in your iPhone's Settings.
We share data only with companies that handle it for us under contract (our "processors" or "service providers"), with friends as you choose, and when the law requires it. Our processors may only use it to provide their service to us.
| Who | What for | What they get |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase (our server host) | Hosts our server and stores data only for us: your account, your backup, your album pictures, your daily results and sick days, friends, chat, and, only with your OK to help improve Tend, usage counts and crash reports | Everything our server holds, including your health data backup |
| Apple | Apple Health and the Apple Watch on your devices, Sign in with Apple, notifications, App Store purchases, and Apple Maps | What each of those needs. Apple Health data stays on your devices under Apple's control. To draw a workout's map, Tend asks Apple Maps for the map of the area around its route; the route's points are drawn on your phone. |
| Sign in with Google | What you approve. Google never gets any health data. | |
| Resend | Sends sign-in codes and account emails | Your email address and the email's contents |
| Apple (WeatherKit) | The weather on your trail | A position rounded to about two-thirds of a mile (1 km), and nothing else about you |
| Open Food Facts | Finding packaged foods | The words of a food search, or a barcode number, and nothing else about you |
| Your friends | The friend features | Your pet, its name and your room always. Your activity only if you turn on sharing (see What other players see). |
We may also share data if the law requires it (for example, a valid court order), to protect someone's safety, or to enforce our terms. If Tend is ever sold or merged, your data would go with it only under the promises in this policy, and we'd tell you first. We have no affiliates.
Tend does not sell your personal information or your health data, and does not "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as California and other states define those words. We don't do targeted advertising and we don't profile you. We have not done any of these in the past 12 months. Because there's nothing to opt out of, there's no "Do Not Sell or Share" switch to find, but you can always write to us, and we honor Global Privacy Control signals and any opt-out request anyway. We don't knowingly sell or share the data of anyone under 16 (or anyone at all).
Tend reads from Apple Health only what you allow, and only to run the game. Data from Apple Health is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with anyone except as this policy says (and never with advertisers or data brokers). Tend never puts your health data in iCloud itself. If you back up your iPhone to iCloud, Apple's encrypted device backup includes Tend's files on your phone. The Tend app on your iPhone reads from Apple Health, and if Save workouts to Apple Health is on (it's on unless you turn it off in Settings), it saves the sessions you start on your iPhone there as workouts, with their distance and, for outdoor ones, their route. The Tend app on your Apple Watch saves the workouts you record with it to Apple Health (with their energy and distance), as any workout app does.
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account, your backup (including your health data) and your album pictures | Until you delete your account or a picture. Deleting removes them from our server right away, and from the server's own backups within 30 days. |
| Your player card, room, daily results, the server's own check of each day's result, streak records, rest and sick days, shared goals and friends | While your account exists; deleted with it. Your past daily results and sick days stay on our server, where friends can no longer see them, until you delete your account. |
| Chat messages | 30 days |
| Notification messages waiting to be sent | 30 days |
| Invitations to exercise together | 1 day |
| Your notification token | Until you sign out on that phone or delete your account |
| Reports you make or that are made about you | 90 days, for safety review |
| Blocks | Until you unblock the person or delete your account |
| Usage events and crash reports (only with your OK to help improve Tend) | While your account exists; deleted with it |
| Your Tend+ subscription record | While your account exists; deleted with it. The list of Apple's notices holds nobody's details and is kept to stop repeats. |
| Your Sign in with Apple token | Until you delete your account, when we ask Apple to revoke it and then delete it. If Apple can't be reached right then, the token alone (with nothing linking it to you) is kept only until Apple takes it back. |
| Anti-cheat checks | 90 days |
| Rate limits (counts that stop a flood of requests) | 7 days |
| An anonymous session that never signed up | Deleted after 30 days without use |
| Server logs with IP addresses | A few days, kept by our server host |
| What's on your phone | Until you delete it (Settings, then Delete everything on this phone) or delete the app. If you back up your iPhone to iCloud, Apple's encrypted device backup includes Tend's files on your phone, and Apple keeps that backup as your iCloud settings say. |
| The routes of your outdoor sessions | On your phone only, for your last 60 sessions, and deleted with everything else on your phone. A workout you saved to Apple Health keeps its route there until you delete it in the Health app. |
Everything travels encrypted. On our server, rules let each account read only its own backup, album and messages, and friends only what this page says they can. You can lock Tend with Face ID. No system is perfect, which is why we also promise the next section.
If there's ever a breach of your health data or other personal information, we'll tell you without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 days after we find out (sooner where a state requires it), by email and in the app. We'll say what happened, what data was involved, what we're doing about it, and what you can do. We'll also tell the Federal Trade Commission and any state that requires it, as the FTC's Health Breach Notification Rule and state laws ask.
Many states (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington) give people rights over their data. We give them to everyone:
Email privacy@playtend.app, or use Contact us in the app. Write from your account's email, or tell us your username, so we can check it's you; we'll only ask for what we need to confirm that. Someone you authorize (an authorized agent) can ask for you with your signed permission. We'll answer within 45 days. If we need more time (up to 45 more days, where the law allows), we'll tell you why. Requests are free.
If we turn down your request, reply to our answer and ask us to look again. We'll answer within 45 days and explain why. If you're still not satisfied, you can contact your state attorney general. For example: Washington, atg.wa.gov/file-complaint; Colorado, coag.gov/file-complaint; Connecticut, portal.ct.gov/ag; Virginia, oag.state.va.us/consumer-protection. In California, you can also contact the California Privacy Protection Agency at cppa.ca.gov.
This is our notice at collection. In the last 12 months we collected these categories of personal information, all for the purposes above and kept as the table above says: identifiers (email, username, account ID, IP address); customer records (name, email); age (a protected characteristic); commercial information (your purchases); internet or other network activity (usage events and crash reports, only with your OK); coarse geolocation (rounded, for weather); audio or visual information (only the pictures the game makes of your pet); inferences (what the game makes of your activity, like your pet's stage, your tier and "well rested"); sensitive personal information (health data, including steps, workouts, the sessions you do in Tend with their time, distance over time, steps, mile splits and estimated calories, sleep and sleep stages, resting heart rate, weight, food, strength logs and sick days; and your account login). We collected them from you, your devices and Apple Health. We disclosed them to the processors listed above for business purposes. We don't sell or share personal information, and we use sensitive personal information only to provide the service you asked for. California's "Shine the Light" law: we don't share personal information with anyone for their direct marketing.
We don't sell covered information or consumer health data. You can still send us an opt-out request at the email below, and we'll confirm it. Tend has no ads and no ad software, so nothing in the app collects information about you over time and across other apps.
Tend doesn't track you across other apps or websites, so a browser's Do Not Track signal doesn't change anything we do. This website has no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
Tend is for adults 18 and over. We ask the year you were born before anything else is collected, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we learn we have, we delete it. If you think a child has used Tend, write to us.
Tend doesn't collect, store or use biometric identifiers or information: no face geometry, fingerprints, voiceprints or retina scans. If you lock Tend with Face ID, your iPhone checks your face and only tells Tend yes or no.
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, like using your data in a new way, we'll tell you in the app first, and for health data we'll ask for your OK again before it applies.
Tend is made by Hayden Rickard, who is responsible for your data and handles privacy requests.
Questions, a copy of your data, a correction, or a request to delete it: privacy@playtend.app. You can also use Contact us in the app's Settings.
